Illegal pet birds in Bali

As Indonesia’s beautiful birds disappear from the wild, who is to blame? Is it the government for not enforcing government regulations on protected animals and educating its people on the importance of an intact ecosystem? Is it the local people scratching to make ends meet by selling off their fauna? Is it those who buy rare birds and hang them gloriously in the front of their house as a status symbol? Is it the foreigners who enjoy seeing exotic birds chained to a perch? Is it the zoos using animals to make money under the guise of animal protection? (Some do). Whatever the reasons, humans are on top of the food chain where they stand in the unique position of determining the fate of many animals on the planet. Listed below are some of the protected bird species rehabilitated by the Bali Wild Animal Rescue Center (PPS) from 2004-2007.

Note: All of these birds are protected under the Indonesian Conservation Law No 5/1990, article #21. The violation of the articles above is threatened by a penalty of maximum 5 years in jail and fine Rp 100,000,000 or US$ 11,000.
