Buying Pcs Overseas And Having Them Shipped To Bali - Good Idea?

Today I have some more information about computer Spyware; some information about buying a PC overseas; another computer worm warning; and my next Question and Answer.

Today I’ve got more warning information that is continued from the last issue-
I received an email about a free program to rid my computer of Spyware.  (This is software that gets installed, without your knowledge, and reports to companies what web sites you’ve visited.  And can actually damage your computer by changing important files!)   DO NOT DOWNLOAD the free program called Spywarenuker!  Do not even go their web site!    Spywarenuker purports to be a removal tool for spy ware, but is itself a harmful program.  Download and install the program, and your computer may lock up, it could keep disconnecting Yahoo! Messenger, and it will add a hidden Registry entry.  It also is delete protected, and is difficult to remove. We DO NOT endorse Spywarenuker and advise anyone that has installed it to delete the program and the Registry entry.
Here is a very good and free program that you should use to rid your computer of these Spyware applications: http://spybot.safer-networking.de/

Buying PCs overseas and having them shipped to Bali - good idea?
I’ll cut to the chase on this issue.  NO.  The answer is ‘no’, for several reasons.
1. Sometimes things get ‘lost in the mail’ (FedEx is very reliable however).
2. It’s is better to buy it here or bring one into Indonesia in your luggage and argue with the customs guy about it’s value than  it is to have it shipped here and have some guy you can’t talk to determine it’s value.
3. There is always the problem with damaged goods and then the hassle and expense of returning it back to the  manufacturer  overseas.

There are several very fine and reliable places here in Bali that will build a computer to exactly fit your needs.  If you aren’t sure of what you want, go to a site like Dell Computers (www.dell.com) and check prices there for different computers with different equipment already installed.  In addition you can go to www.zdnet.com to see what they recommend. Print out the details after you’ve made your decisions and take it to Mega Systems in Ubud or to the shops in RIMO’s Bali Computer Center in Denpasar and have them give you quotes for a new computer.  Remember that if your current computer is more than 3 years old, it’s cheaper and better to give it to a local school and then purchase a new one.

Favorite LINK:  Be on the lookout for a new worm that’s on the web this week. The Fizzer worm spreads by way of email or the Kazaa (peer-to-peer) network.  This complex worm has several capabilities including an external keylogger, backdoor access and much more.  You are advised to update your virus definitions immediately in order to keep your system secure.  For more details, check out: http://datadr.com/redir.cfm/Fizzer_Virus/

Q: Why does my computer seem very slow when I am printing something on my printer?  Trevor in Kerobokan
A: When you have your software print something on your printer, a number intermediate steps take place that you are not aware of.  1st, the software must work very hard to convert the information you see on the screen into information that your printer can understand.  The longer the document, the longer this takes.  Next, it copies all this information to your hard drive.  It does this to make your printing go faster because your printer gets all its information from the hard drive.  Next, your printer gets a small amount of information from your hard drive and moves it to its own internal memory.  And THEN it starts printing.  As the information in its own memory is used up, it gets more from your hard drive.  So you see your computer and your printer and your hard drive are all working together to print out your document.  If you happen to have another program running that wants to use the hard drive, it may have to wait until your printer is not accessing it.  Therefore, be a little patient and think of how nice it will look when the printing is completed.
