WiFi – what the heck is it?

WiFi (short for “wireless fidelity”) is the popular term for a high-frequency wireless local area network (WLAN). The WiFi technology is rapidly gaining acceptance in many companies as an alternative to a wired LAN.  It can also be installed for a home network.  The 802.11b (WiFi) technology operates in the 2.4 GHz range offering data speeds up to 11 megabits per second.  Unless adequately protected, a WiFi wireless LAN can be susceptible to access from the outside by unauthorized users, some of whom have used the access as a free Internet connection.

What does it do for me?
With the proper hardware you can connect to the internet or a company’s (or your home) LAN (local area network) with NO wires.  Image walking into an internet café (or your hotel room) and having a high speed internet connection without attaching any wires to your laptop!  Several hotels and soon, several ISPs will have this capability.

Where is it available now:
Global Xtreme Broadband Internet is a Bali  Internet Service Provider or ISP (Broadband Internet) and provides Bali internet access with wireless internet system and direct connection via satellite. Bali WiFi hotspot is famous now in Indonesia and also all over the world, as one of the leading Internet Service Provider in Bali.  You can bring your own laptop and connect to the Internet via wireless system in the Global Xtreme Internet office in Jalan Raya Kerobokan 388 X, Br. Semer - Kerobokan - Kuta.

Guests staying at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua, formerly the Sheraton Nusa Indah, have the option of going on-line via wireless broadband access in all public areas or via a dedicated high speed line available in every one of the resorts 353 guest rooms. The new service is part of a US$ 5 million refurbishment program being carried out at the resort in connection with its re-launch under the Westin banner.

Also the Ritz-Carlton’s Executive Business Center has high-speed internet access and WiFi for laptops and more.

Do you use Google as your search program like I do?  Go to : http://vivisimo.com/ it adds some features you’ll love.  It takes your search results and organizes them into categories!  It makes searching even easier.  I’ve also added both Google to my IE toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) but also have added Vivisimo’s minibar (http://vivisimo.com/toolbar/minibar-download.html)! They work well together!
