With this BaliPC Advisor article I thought I’d get a
little personal. I’ve had many friends and readers ask
me how my computer is set up; what operating system does Pak
Bruce use; what software do I use everyday; and more. So here
comes a list of software that I use and love and could not
do without, and where to get it, how much, etc. I don’t
list their web sites. You can do a Google search or try http://www.download.com.
WinBar – During the time I was forced to use my laptop
(which is VERY slow) for several months, I found this great
little FREE program. It sits at the top of your screen and
can tell you things like: % of your CPU is being used or how
much memory is being used (this will let you know why your
system is running so slow at that moment); WinAMP and volume
controls; date and time; it even has 3 little lights that
tell you if CapsLock, NumLock; or ScrollLock is pressed!
Outlook – MUCH better than OutlookExpress. Outlook can
do many time saving chores for you. I use it to sort ALL incoming
mail (and some outgoing as well) into folders!
Norton Systemworks – Yes, it’s big; yes, it slows
your system down a little. But, just like a policeman would
NOT go on-duty with out his body armor; you shouldn’t
be on the internet without this AND;
ZoneAlarm – The best firewall there is and it’s
free. Turn off the WinXP SP2 firewall and download this for
maximum protection.
Advanced SMTP Server – If you have ‘always on’
connection to the internet but have trouble ‘sending’
mail, then download this and let your own computer be an email
‘sending’ computer instead of your ISP.
Keep Alive – If you use a ‘dial-up’ connection
to the internet and it sometimes ‘times-out’ and
disconnects you while you’re composing that email to
grandma, use this to keep yourself connected.
WinZip and WinRAR – These are the two ‘industry
standard’ compression methods. They both work extremely
well. But, you should have both installed to be able to use
ANY compressed files you may get.
WebShots – I love this FREE software. I use it as my
screensaver. It has lots of really great images you can download
from their site, but I use my own. If you have lots of digital
photos on your computer and would love to use them as your
wallpaper and screensaver – this is the program for
you. Plus you can add a calendar to your desktop.
KLM Codec136 – If you’ve ever been given or downloaded
a movie that wouldn’t play on your computer, you need
this! It has all the ‘special program codes’ to
let you watch almost ANY movie!
