These are some of the web sites that I visit often. Of course,
since computers and the internet ARE my business, I spend
a lot of time (too much my wife says) on the internet.
Hometown newspaper - First thing to try is http://www.yourhometownnewspaper.com
(fill in the name of the paper, e.g., NYTIMES for the New
York Times). If that isn’t it, then do a
Google search for the name of your local newspaper.
Mine is the San Francisco Chronicle. But their website
is http://www.SFGATE.com.
Major news websites: (Do the same as above to find their
sites):
NY Times
Washington Post
International Herald Tribune
CNN
http://www.BF2005.com - If you are planning on being in the
States and want to buy almost anything, this is a must website!
It lists, by store name, their advertised specials for the
coming week or week-end. I found a great laptop for
US$300 this way!
http://www.Slashdigg.com – This is a combination of
the Digg.com and Slashdot.com web sites. Digg.com
has fantastic links to articles, photos, videos, and more
that you won’t find otherwise. These are submitted
by people and then listed on the site. It changes very
quickly, so I scan it often throughout the day. Slashdot.com
has a little more about technical/computer related items,
but also is filled with interesting information.
http://www.liveplasma.com – Ever wondered who else makes
music like your favorite artists? Then enter their names
at this site and see ‘related’ artists.
Try it, it’s hard to explain.
http://lyricsfly.com/ - Find the lyrics to those songs you’ve
been only humming lately.
http://www.imdb.com - (Internet Movie Data base) has information
on many, many movies – plot, stars, director, etc.
http://www.imsdb.com - (Internet Movie Script Data base) has
the entire screen play for many, many movies!
http://www.epinions.com/ - Want to know what other consumers
thought about the camera or DVD player you are about to buy?
This is the place. Simply enter the model number and
see what others thought!
http://www.straightdope.com/ - Ever wondered if everyone in
the world shakes their head up and down to mean ‘yes’?
This is the place to have those bizarre questions answered.
‘In the Northern Hemisphere the water drains clockwise;
while in the Southern Hemisphere it drains counter-clockwise”
– True or False? Find out here! Click on “Straight
Dope archive” to search. (You can also subscribe to
their weekly mailing list – I do.)
http://www.commondreams.org – Links to the latest articles
of a ‘progressive’ (liberal) political leaning.
Are these the ONLY sites I visit often – NO! But,
these are the ones I’d feel lost without. If you
have some that you can’t live without, please email
them to me, and I might add them to a future column!
Of course email me with all your computer related questions
and I will try and answer them or, at least steer you in the
right direction.
