There is no doubt that TOO MUCH sun in high doses is NOT good for one’s skin. A little sun does provide a lovely ‘sunkissed’ healthy glow, but am sure that the days of lying in the sun have gone for many (having overdone brown skin ,cracked dry like the earth) is just not what beauty is about anymore! Therefore one of the most popular beauty treatments nowadays is – sunless tanning & the results are excellent.
GLO DAY SPA – for inner beauty & outer glow!
Apart from a myriad of beauty treatments that the Glo Day Spa offer, thought a review of two sunless tanning alternatives would be of interest - There’s Spray Tanning (Bonza Bronz) & the popular St. Tropez tan, both products are imported from Australia & tested by industry professionals. St. Tropez tan is a very popular procedure at GLO DAY SPA - Very easy – the most important aspect is to exfoliate your skin first, ideally when you rise in the morning, scrub your body well under the shower. When you arrive at the salon, the therapist will discuss the color tone you wish to achieve (colors can be mixed to the desired tone) strip down (paper underwear is provided) & the tanning procedure begins, taking about an hour. It’s advisable to wear dark clothes after a treatment, just in case a little of the color rubs off (if it does, color does wash out well from clothing) try not to shower for 8 hrs after the treatment, the color will set completely & will last about one week. About this time, scrub your body well to even out the color, you can then go back to the salon for a ‘top up’. A point to remember is that the cost covers the complete overall body, even if you just have your legs & arms done. Cost of this treatment is only Rp290,000, a great idea without sitting in the sun for hours & baking your skin to parched leather! Tanning Essentials are their range of home products - from a Tinted Self-Tan Lotion, Whipped Bronze & Bronzing Mist along with a Body Polisher & more.
Now with the Spray Tanning, there are firstly different shades from Extreme (the most popular) then Machiato to Shimmer (the ones for Brides & for a special event)
Again the same prep procedure for the body as with the St.Tropez treatment, but it’s a Spray treatment & not a Lotion rubbed in.
I seem to remember that many of the sun tanning products of old, often produced that dreadful ‘orange’ effect to one’s skin, however with today’s new products on the market, this issue has pretty well been overcome – thankfully!
BALI is full of SALONS, SPA’S and places for MASSAGE, everywhere you turn there is a new place that opens up. Many visitors come to Bali simply for the above experiences, lovely smiling faces, but are the staff experienced & trained and do they really understand what is required in terms of proper hygiene for the beauty business. Some do but many don’t and I am rather amazed at the number of Westerners that don’t even question such issues either.
Obviously, hygiene should be of the utmost importance to all of us, as an expat living here or as a visitor to the isle. The tropics do breed infections more so than any other place. If you cut yourself on the finger, you will see how much longer it takes to heal.
Therefore, before we move further into the months and forthcoming columns, I would like to make it known what my PET PEEVE’S are & hopefully many of these salon owners will re-look at their business & take note.
Washing hands with hot water and soap is a must, make sure your therapist performs this basic & vital task before a treatment.
Does your therapist wear gloves/face mask at all times. If they have long hair, do they wear it pulled back in a pony tail or twist.
How many times do you walk into a salon & see the staff eating, the smell of hot food within a salon is not the most pleasant of experiences.
How many times does one see staff (and people in general) picking at their face or squeezing pimples?
How many times do we see ladies on the beach removing hair lice from each others head and then the next minute they are calling you for a massage or manicure/pedicure.
Massage on the beach? Apart from lice, what about the lotions/oils they use, skin allergies & infections, the same goes for tattoos performed on the beach, what sort of hygiene do these guys have?
How many soiled, discolored & simply grotty towels have I noted in many establishments, not to mention the unmade salon/massage tables that one is expected to lie on after another ‘body’ has been before you.
Are those hair brushes/combs really clean? no one would really know until we get a dose of dandruff!
Sterilizers & Autoclave for instruments used for manicures & pedicures, this is an absolute MUST! How many people have experienced fungal infections of the nails and they are hell to get rid of! One needs more than an antiseptic lotion to cleanse instruments.
So, if you lust after a lovely Beauty treatment in a Salon or Spa, make sure you check the facilities out first, it’s pretty easy to tell if you will give them a10/10 rating.
