All cultures have their share of pregnancy myths which have developed over the centuries, influenced by the environment, society and many other tangible factors. Over time, however, many of these have either been dispelled by modern science or have simply disappeared, as times change or cultures interact with each other. This is not so true in Bali however. Surrounded by a strong and vibrant culture, the Balinese still hang onto a number of myths surrounding pregnancy and the birth. The following is just a few that I have handpicked for your interest:
- A husband whose wife is pregnant is forbidden to cut his hair. The Balinese believe that cutting his locks may cause birth defects or even a miscarriage.
- The couple should avoid telling others about the pregnancy, especially in the early stages. It’s believed that this can cause miscarriage by use of black magic.
- A husband is forbidden to do bad deeds, especially things like killing someone or even killing an animal, since it is believed this can have a negative effect on the baby, perhaps even causing birth defects.
- During the pregnancy the mother is not allowed to see or hear anything bad, only good things. Seeing or hearing bad things could have a negative effect on the spiritual life of the unborn baby.
- A pregnant mother should make a habit of drinking young coconut milk or splashing the milk on her abdomen. This is thought to cleanse the baby, ensuring that it will be born with clear and unblemished skin.
- During contractions, the husband or the family should open all the windows of the house to ease the passage of birth.
So next time you’re with a Balinese man who is looking a little shaggy, ask him if he just missed his barber’s appointment or if there’s a special secret that he should be letting you in on!
