Lombok Luxury… Too, too Tugu!

Lombok can offer visitors some fabulous accommodation – from exclusive villas with private pools on Gili Trawangan to luxurious beachfront resorts in Senggigi, Mangsit and Kuta – but, once in a very long while, a place comes along that stands in a class of its own. Such is Hotel Tugu, Lombok.

Those already acquainted with the Tugu Hotels in Java and Bali will know that the benchmark for the Tugu brand is that of distinctive and unique properties featuring lavish use of antiques and traditional local decorations. The Tugu in Lombok stakes its claim as a unique resort immediately with an awesome beachfront location right on the sands of the stunningly beautiful Pantai Sire on the north coast of Lombok.

Conveniently close to the Kosaido Country Club golf course, which also sprawls along the beachfront at Sire, Tugu is in good company, with a number of private luxury villas now being opened in the area and the prestigious Oberoi, Lombok located close by.

The rarefied Tugu atmosphere starts from the entrance of the hotel, with green lawns stretching down to the sparkling blue ocean in front and architecturally startling buildings grouped across six hectares of coconut plantations. To the right, the ancient timbers of a reconstructed Javanese building houses a meeting hall of majestic proportions. To the left, a pathway winds to the reception area, flanked by kneeling Goddesses and lush gardens. But the building that most catches the eye is the awe-inspiring Buddhist temple with its soaring pagoda inset with life-sized statues of Gods and Goddesses, inspired by ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples of long ago, which houses the sumptuous Spa.

Crossing the antique bridge over the lily pond from reception, guests are greeted with the stunning sight of 10 metre tall statues of Dewi Sri, the Indonesian Rice Goddess, supporting the pillars of the spacious open air Kokok Pletok restaurant. The floor seems to float out into the infinity pool that stretches toward the ocean, with a 10 metre statue of the God Vishnu facing the Goddesses from the other end. It is a magnificent place to dine or to recline on the cushions alongside the pool, surrounded by otherworldly beings as you drink in the stunning views of the calm ocean and the soaring peaks of the Rinjani mountain range beyond.

Accommodation, as one would expect, continues this theme of startling design and sumptuous luxury. Both the Aloon-Aloon garden villas and the Kampong Lombok bungalows offer guests elegant comforts, but it is the Bhagavat Gita villas that steal the show. Translated as “Song of Heaven”, a stay in one of these seven villas is not to be forgotten. Each villa is wonderfully private, surrounded by screening walls and gardens. Stepping through the gated entrance, guests are greeted by a calm lotus pond filled with Koi in a pretty garden with a pathway leading up to the carved wooden doors of the suite.

Inside a room of awesome proportions opens up to a towering thatched roof, creating a spacious and cool atmosphere. Dominating the room is a grandiose four poster bed, each post created from a single lovingly polished tree trunk, draped in soft white curtains. Cushioned lounges, carved mirrors, tiffany lamps and antique furnishings seduce guests with elegant charm. In one corner an intimate seating arrangement offers up complimentary fruits and water, and is the perfect place to enjoy the delicious afternoon teas that Tugu provides to guests every day.
On the other side of the room, an antique curtain draws back to reveal the walk in robe and the amazing open-air garden bathroom beyond. From the bathroom, windows open onto the lily pond and, at the far end, a huge river boulder sits in a private open air garden; the inside of the rock hollowed out to create a smooth bath tub surrounded by greenery, next to a decorative well. Adjacent is a huge stone tiled wet area with an oversized rain shower, where guests can enjoy the sensation of showering in a garden in the rain.

At the front of the room, French doors open onto the terrace, looking out over the private plunge pool bordered by lawns stretching down to the beachfront. There is a private garden bale with soft cushions, sun lounges for relaxing by the pool, and a table and chairs for outside dining on the lawn. One of the distinctive services offered by the hotel is allowing guests to choose any place within the grounds to dine. Ask to dine on the beachfront and you will find a romantic table for two, decked in crisp white cloth and gleaming silverware, set up on the sand nearby surrounded by a circle of flickering candles. Or choose to dine next to your pool, or by the lily ponds, or even on the rooftop of that amazing Buddhist temple Spa with panoramic views all around.

Hotel Tugu, Lombok is a destination hotel, rather than a place to stay while touring around. Hotel facilities include swimming pools and indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, Spa and beauty treatments, exercise room, beach volleyball, games, DVD’s and library, traditional cooking classes, Samedhi meditation classes and yoga, and more. With so much luxury to enjoy and so many services available, there is little reason to leave the hotel grounds apart from a game of golf at the nearby golf course, or perhaps to charter the Hotel’s private boat for a day island hopping around the Gili Islands that lay in the ocean only minutes away. Some hotels are merely superb; Hotel Tugu Lombok defies classification and creates a class of its own.
