Arrested for Rape
John Daniel Inskif, 49, from Australia, was arrested for rape of Car, 28, his former girlfriend. Car reported that Inskif raped her in her house in Denpasar on Saturday (7/2). Inskif has refused to be interrogated by the police as he is waiting for his attorney and consulate. (Denpost Feb. 9)
Hotel Room Thief Arrested
A thief that stole from rooms in a hotel in Petitenget, Kuta, was arrested by the police on Saturday (7/2). The thief is a hotel employee, Miko M. Yamin, 26. The police interrogated each employee after a guest reported that his belongings disappeared from his room with no sign of force to enter the room. It was reported that December 2003 to January 2004, Miko entered seven rooms and stole Euro 4300. “We will confiscate Rp. 35.5 million in electronic appliances and a motorcycle bought from the stolen money as well as Rp 3.5 million cash,” said Chief of Denpasar Crime Department, Wawan Ridwan. 42 Tourists Deported from Airport
One week following the implementation of visa on arrival, 42 tourists have been deported from Ngurah Rai Airport. According to Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Rai Gde Widiartha, the 42 tourists are from Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Mexico, Belgium, Turkey and Ireland. When they arrived in the airport, they didn’t have visas. “We act according to the rule,” said Widiartha. The tourists were deported on the next flight leaving Bali. Based on Presidential Decree only 11 countries can enjoy free tourist visas and 21 countries enjoy visa on arrival. Other than those 32 countries, tourists should apply for a visa from the Indonesian Embassy in their country. (BP Feb. 9)
Strong Winds Leave 5000 People Homeless
A strong wind and heavy downpour from Tuesday to Wednesday (3-4/2) brought heavy damage to villages in Karangasem and Buleleng. The strong wind also devastated chili and tomato plantations in Kintamani resulting in millions of rupiah loss for the farmers. (Nusa Feb. 6)
Most Regencies in Bali Infected by Bird Flu
Most regencies in Bali have been infected by avian influenza virus. A Rp 212 billion fund was set up to help breeders for vaccination, poultry culling, and laboratory facilities. Breeders that do not cull their infected hens will get sanctions. (BP Feb. 6)
Hundreds of Trees Down in Petang
A high wind that had blown from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning (3-4/2) demolished many houses in Sulangai Village, Petang. In addition, hundreds of trees were blown down along the road blocking traffic. (Denpos Feb.5)
Subsidy for Chicken Breeders
A short visit by Minister of Social Welfare Yusuf Kalla to the center of poultry production in Tabanan, on Saturday (31/1) was to ask the breeders to kill infected birds. “We ask the breeder to voluntarily eradicate the infected hens since it is the effective way to prevent the infection,” Kalla said. Dining with the Governor
To show that there is no worry over the avian influenza virus that attacked hundred of thousands of hens in Bail, Bali Governor Dewa Made Beratha held a chicken dinner at the Hotel Jayakarta, on Wednesday (28/1). The dinner was attended by officials of Bali Province Office and some Australian tourists. Beratha affirmed that if the chickens are cooked in 80ºC for four minutes, they will be safe to be consumed.
