33,000 Indonesians Infected by HIV
Coordinator of Global Fund-AIDS, TBC and Malaria, Dr. Salamun, confirmed that 33,000 Indonesians are infected by the HIV virus. Research by Dr. Salamun in 1999 showed that 30 percent of narcotics addicts are infected by HIV virus. He made his comments when he gave training on HIV/AIDS prevention on Sunday (7/3). (BP Mar. 8)
Thousands of Liters of Alcohol Seized

One month since the implementation of visa on arrival, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office earned Rp 14 billion in foreign exchange from 64,666 regular visa on arrival and 3,507 short term visa [USD10 for visiting Bali for maximum three days]. Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, I Gede Widiartha, said that there were 68,173 tourists obliged to pay for a visa while the total number of foreign tourists visiting Bali on February was 84,348. Death of US Citizen Still a Mystery
The death of Sandra Jean Burfon, a US citizen, who was found dead in her bathroom in Sanur on Friday (1/3), is still a mystery. One of the servants, Agus Susanto, said that he had heard a noise on the second floor before Burfon’s husband, Robert Arden Delf, 55, called for help. Agus who hurried to the second floor saw that Burfon’s chest was smeared with blood. And that Delf’s mouth was also smeared with blood. “I was asked to call the ambulance, not the police.” said Agus. When the body was brought to the hospital, Delf asked Nengah, another maid, and Agus to clean the bedcover, pillow and bathroom floor that was smeared with blood. (Denpost Mar. 2)
Australian Pedophile Fugitive Arrested in Bali
Bali Police, on Saturday (28/2), arrested a fugitive of from Australia, Paul Thompson, 55, in an inn in Kuta. The Australian citizen has been long hunted by Western Australia Police. He was deported in the evening to Canberra to be secured by Australian Federal Police (AFP). Thompson has many aliases such as Paul Jarvis and Paul Spraggs. He has been fugitive since escaping from jail in 1991 for sexual abuse of children. “When we were sure he was the one, we arrested him,” said Bali Police Spokesperson Kombes Pengasihan Gaut. Dengue Fever in Bali
Dengue fever in Bali claimed another victim. I Gusti Ayu Gede Mariani Astuti, 30, died in Sanglah Hospital on Thursday (26/2) after having dengue shock syndrome. Previously, Sumardi, 25 died on Feb. 5 after being treated for five days. Other 35 patients are still being intensively treated. The total number of dengue fever patients in Sanglah Hospital is 169. They are from Denpasar, Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Bangli, Buleleng and Karangasem. (Denpost Feb. 27)
