Taking Time Off

Time off – relaxation, a holiday, a break from habitual things.  I often wish I could take time off from – myself!  My normal neuroses, habits thought-forms and ach!  I’d just like a break from being me for a while, just trip out in pure white consciousness not being anything or anybody!  Maybe that really is the essence of ‘going on holiday’!

Anyway taking time off.  Finding ways to relax.  Sometimes it’s good to make a space to just be alone.  Turn off the phone.  Cut off from outside input.  Spend a day at home, or at the beach, just reading, writing, journalling, just being with oneself.  Or just do something different.  If you are childless, try spending a day with a friend who has children.  If you don’t work, volunteer to help a friend’s work.  What can you do that’s different, just to shift yourself into a different gear?

Sometimes hard work is a great relaxation strategy – digging the garden is very therapeutic for example, or clearing rubbish.  When doing something like this, it can be nice to give it meaning – for example, as you dig, imagine you are preparing the ground of your life for something new.  As you clear rubbish, imagine you are clearing your life of that which is no longer needed.

Another good way to relax is to get physical, really get into the body.  Play squash or tennis, go to the gym, dance, or go for a run.  Receiving a massage is also very positive, as is – giving one!  Even giving a hand or foot massage to a friend is an excellent way for both people to really relax.

How to get away from myself?  Well I have decided to spend a week doing some non-habitual things.  Do some things I’ve never tried and would never normally do.  Like – laugh!  And stop being so serious!  Might rent a few funny films!  As soon as you get serious you can bet you have really ‘lost the plot’!  Learning something new is a great way to unwind – learning to drive, take up art or pottery, or learn a language all brings in new insights, new growth.
Being in a different way
Every judgement that we make of others is really a judgement against ourselves, and it boomerangs back to us.  Examples are where we find fault with another’s clothes, hair, style, activity, etc.  Why not have a ‘holiday’ from judgement for a day?  Simply begin to notice where you are judging, and nip it in the bud.  One way is, soon as you notice yourself judging someone, immediately look at someone else.  You’d want others to just accept you as you are, wouldn’t you?

Stress Relief
Stuck in the office?  ‘Neck rolls’ are an excellent stress reliever that you can do even sitting at a desk.  A mini-break in the middle of your day!  Drop your head forward, then angle it back and to the right, then rotate all the way round.  Slowly – it should take eight and a half seconds to complete a rotation.  Continue until most of the clicks and crunches in your neck are eliminated!  Then drop your head forward, angle to the left and go the other way.  As well as being deeply relaxing, this brings an affirming sense of yourself as ‘sacred’ and precious as well.

‘ Something Different’ Meditation
Relax, and imagine that you find yourself in a beautiful garden.  In your garden, you are guided to a cave. Inside it’s like a cinema, and you sit down to watch the film.  Sinking into a comfortable chair, you see yourself up on the movie screen.  What are you wearing?  Where are you?  What are you doing?  Relax, and watch yourself acting up on the big screen.  The scene changes, and you watch yourself doing and being in a new environment.  What are you doing?  What are you wearing?  Who might you be?  Then gently return, bringing any insights into how you might be, back to your everyday life.

Refreshing Energy Shower Meditation
This will refresh and revive you and revitalise your body and the chakra system and aura.  Sit quietly. Pull the spine up straight and tuck the chin slightly. Close the eyes.  Now breathe in and visualise that you are sucking golden light energy up the back of your body, from toes to head.  Exhale, push the energy down the front of your body from head to toes.  Continue, sucking energy up the back of the body, exhaling down the front.  Really work at it – you should work up a sweat!  Come on!  Inhale, suck the energy up the back.  Exhale, push the energy down the front.Continue for three minutes, then inhale deep, exhale and push the energy shower out the top of your head.  You’ll feel a refreshing shower of light energy falling all around you!  Drink it in!
