Work, and Finding Your Path

I’m a Capricorn, and oh dear! Us goats are renowned for plodding slowly and inexorably up the mountain until we reach the zenith.  In my life, this has meant ‘work, work, work’! - a focus on work to the exclusion of just about everything else.  I plodded my way from ‘temp secretary’ to ‘second vice president’ in a big American company in about eight years.  It was fun.  But my life was almost all about work.  Then, in Bali, I had a child, escaped work of a conventional kind almost completetly for four or five years.  Now it seems it is time for me to get back on my path.  Eeek!

So, what is ‘the path?’  Well, it’s about sharing our unique gifts.  Giving our unique talents to the world.  Finding and realising that very special thing that shines within us, that only we can do.  What’s yours?  Do you know?  Go quiet a minute and seek the answer within.  When I asked the moon that question recently, the reply was ‘to love and to sing’.  Sometimes the vision is very simple!  Then we just need to work out what it means in practical terms!  Trust whatever comes.  Simple is good!

‘ To love and to sing’ is about doing sound healing, which is my unfolding path and my secret talent!  Performing in a band is the part of this, and when I get up there, I am so filled with joy that there can be no denying that THIS IS IT!  If your idea of what is ‘your path’ or ‘your purpose’ fills you with dread or apathy, well, you haven’t found it yet!  Trust that your true path will be the very thing that really makes your soul sing, and hold out for that.  Maybe there’s a small part of what you are doing now, that makes your soul sing?  If that’s the case, get creative – how can you expand that part of what you are doing, and offload the bits that don’t fill you with joy?  My bit of creativity was to find a great karaoke bar in Seminyak where I can practise singing in front of a live band!  Wheee!  Instant stardom!  I’m still pretty lousy at the moment but hey, it’s an easy and quick forum for practising!  I love it!

Sorry, but usually, no mysterious angel appears with a stone tablet denoting what your path is.  Instead, it’s an unfolding that happens one step at a time.  It’s a discovery of ‘who we are’, not just ‘what we are doing’.  Try to ask every step of the way ‘is this the right step?’ it’s much better that way – a fixed destiny can mean that once we eventually get to that mountain top goal, without testing each step of the way, we might end up saying ‘eh! How did I get HERE? This is not where I want to BE!’ because, of course, our path changes and evolves as we walk it.  It is not fixed.  Let it unfold, one step at a time.

The other problem is... FEAR!   The old favourite that stop us doing, oh, oodles of things!  If you feel you ‘should’ be doing something other than what you are doing, then either different parts of yourself are in conflict (one part wants to do it, the other part doesn’t) in which case, you need to get these different aspects of your being to have a chat about it... Or, you are afraid of manifesting your dream.  The way over and around fear is to articulate to yourself what you are really afraid of.  Write on a piece of paper ‘I am afraid that...’ and keep filling it in until all your fears are listed.

Common fears include ‘fear of success’ – we are often afraid of overwhelm if we get what we really want!  Here are some examples of my fears about being a sound healer:  I am afraid that... if I am a successful sound healer my dear ones will be intimidated and won’t love me any more... I will have to work long hours/late at night and I don’t want to...I will have to stand up and make sounds in front of people and I am afraid of looking stupid...  Once the fears are out, it’s not so hard to handle them.  I just need to organise things so that the problems are not an issue (talk to the dear ones, arrange timing, overcome fear of looking stupid by first performing in front of small group, etc).

And OH GOD I am so excited and I so want to do this!!  That’s a good feeling!   Well we got there in the end!  So will you, if you just trust yourself, trust your inner voice, and take one little step at a time.  Follow your bliss – what really makes you feel happy and excited.  Best of luck – the world needs and wants your gifts!
