In the beginning there was an endless expanse of white light and boundless love. It was formless consciousness, what you might call ‘God’, or just, love. It began to wonder about itself. It began to feel a bit... bored and lonely! So, it decided to divide itself up into bits that could then interact. So that it could express itself. So that there would be someone to play with. Only, it had to make each little bit forget that it was part of the whole, because otherwise, the game wouldn’t work – each little bit would know it was just God, playing with itself, wouldn’t it? And that might seem a bit ‘fake’ and unsatisfying. So, each little bit of consciousness became a soul, in a person, which is really God just looking out at itself through the world, and expressing itself. So everything that every person does, is literally, just God expressing itself.
The idea that God is separate, is somehow outside of ourselves, is untrue. The idea that anything is separate from us is untrue. Everything that we are looking at in the world, everything, whether so called ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is purely God expressing ourself. We are God looking at ourself.
Now, because we have forgotten who we are, which is just a divided up part of the game, we like to point at things and say ‘that’s bad – that’s not part of me!’. We also like to point at parts of our self, and say ‘anger, that’s bad, that’s not me!’ or ‘fear, that’s bad, that’s not me!’. Becoming whole is about embracing everything. Absolutely everything. And allowing it. That means, not expressing anger, by yelling at someone. No. It means, merely, embracing the fact that you are angry. Allowing.
Every single difficulty or struggle in the world comes from us separating ourself, either from another part of ourselves, from others, or from a way in which someone is expressing themselves (however mad that is). Enlightenment is literally ‘shining the light’ on parts of ourself, embracing them, however awful they may appear to be, and just allowing those parts to be as they are. The same outwardly – allowing poverty, allowing war, allowing dogshit, allowing all the ‘awfulness’ to just be. This non-resistance allows us to become whole. Oh yes, I’m God, I am everything, the dogshit is me, the war is me, that disaster is me, that lovely flower is me, this delicious cake is me. And it’s all ok. Because it just is. Then life just becomes a kind of playground for us to play in, as God. We stop judging anything. And we may want to choose some different and more enjoyable conscious creations for ourselves!
As soon as we stop resisting, as soon as we stop making anything bad, everything becomes ok. A kind of bliss settles and we can just be who we are, God, amongst all the chaos, doing what we can to make things more pleasant, but no longer attached to the badness of anything. Or the good-ness of anything, come to that.
When Christ said ‘love thy neighbour as thyself’ he was alluding to the fact that literally everything IS thyself – ie, God. There is only one thing here, it’s God, we are it, we’re all looking at it, there is literally no separation. Therefore, why would we ever be nasty to anyone else, when they are just another part of who we are?
Does God want a particular outcome, from this game? I don’t think so. To God, it’s all just an interesting experiment. Shakespeare was right when he said ‘all the world’s a stage’ it’s all just an interesting... show! Do we need to ascend to another dimension, improve or do something different? Not really. You can appear in the play without knowing you’re an actor, or you can be there as a master performer, choosing your own lines. If you want to choose to express yourself by becoming more aware, then you can, and that gives you more choices. You can play more consciously, create more interesting things, improvise, which may be more enjoyable for you and other people. But there’s no requirement to do that. You see, feeling that certain expressions are ‘good’ and others are ‘bad’ is just more judgement! Once you have no judgement, everything is fine just as it is. (even judgement itself, is a perfectly acceptable expression!)
Embracement Meditation
Relax, breathe deeply, and find yourself in your garden. There’s a wall around it, you feel safe. Notice the smells, sights, and sounds. Now take yourself to a high place, and wait for a guide. The guide leads you into a cave and shows you a crystal. Look deep into the crystal. You are now being shown more of who you are. Accept and embrace what you see. Understand that all of you is absolutely fine, just as you are. When you are ready, return gently to the room. The more you embrace, the more whole you become.
