Island Style : Tropical Dream House in Indonesia
by Gillian Beal, Photographs by Jacob Termansen
From medieval times, travelers have returned from the East bringing designs, artifacts and architectural ideas with them. The Indonesian archipelago – with its myriad peoples, cultures and arts and crafts traditions – has long been a source of particular inspiration. Now, many are choosing to stay here and building dream retreats in natural tropical settings.
Graced with a warm tropical climate, an exquisite heritage of local design and craftsmanship, and an abundance of natural building materials, Indonesia has nurtured many of Asia’s most creative architects and designers.
Island Style showcases over 25 dwellings – be they private homes, resort villas or island hideaways. All harness Indonesia’s unique architectural and design ethos melded with Western aesthetics. Simple yet exotic, clean-lined and contemporary, metropolitan or in more remote locations, each is the stuff of which dreams are made.
It is almost impossible to define an “Indonesian architectural style,” as there are so many disparate building forms spread among the islands – from the saddle-back roof designs of north Sumatra’s Batak peoples to the rambling longhouses of Borneo. But what all the houses have in common is that they blend into their environment while fusing the traditions of local architecture with the influence of modernism.
This book presents contemporary Indonesian homes and interiors that feature the use of ethnic Indonesian elements in new and exciting ways. It’s pages contain hundreds of practical design ideas for interiors, doorways, walls, furnishings, furniture and lighting.
From metropolitan Jakarta to faraway island beach retreats and converted Javanese coffee plantations perched high on the slopes of towering volcanoes, many of these homes and resorts have never before been photographed. All have been selected for their immaculate design, originality of concept and innovative use of age-old architectural patterns with a modern sense of aesthetics.
Author Gillian Beal studied History of Art in the UK and moved to Bali in 1991 where she developed a strong interest in vernacular architecture and its application to contemporary homes and hotels. She is the co-author of Balinese Children’s Favorite Stories and her work has appeared in a number of regional magazines.
Photographer Jacob Termansen has made lifestyle his subject matter and over the years his work has been published in many international publications, books and magazines where his very personal and passionate eye for detail and his distinctive style is easily recognized.
Photographed entirely on location, Island Style showcases the application of Eastern ideals in a truly global setting.
