Southeast Asia on a Shoestring, by 11 authors, published by Lonely Planet
Hit the Southeast Asia trail with Lonely Planet’s latest edition of their Southeast Asia on a Shoestring. The first edition of this classic guide was actually the prototype upon which one of the most successful guidebook companies in the history of publishing was built.
In 1972, Tony and Maureen Wheeler set out on a journey across Europe and Asia to Australia. At the time there was no useful information about the overland “hippie” trail, so to meet a growing need they published the first Lonely Planet guidebook - the very first edition of Southeast Asia on a Shoestring.
First laid out on a kitchen table, what became known as the “yellow bible” has grown to a tree-killing 972 pages replete with color, full-bleed tabs to indicate chapters, and 170 user-friendly and amazingly detailed maps.
Lonely Planet has over the years become known worldwide for bringing out practical, reliable and no-nonsense travel information in their guidebooks and on their website. They are the experts at getting you down the road and seeing to it that you’re well-fed and well-entertained and have a decent roof over your head at the end of a long traveling day.
In the latest edition of their Southeast Asia guide, readers can get the scoop on current events, history and culture in a new “Snapshots” section. The guide contains over 3000 listings of the best local eateries, bars and accommodations. Other special features include page cross-referencing, glossary, an expanded index and language tips for Thai, Vietnamese and Malay.
A captivating hour can be spent just reading the guide’s hilarious and informative sidebars on such travel topics as “Crossing into Thailand from Poipet,” “Beer Lao,” “Getting into Town,” “Planning for Taman Negara,” “Motorcycle Tip,” and “Bangkok A Go Go.” The guide’s “Reading Up,” “Did you Know?” and “Splurge” boxes give advice on what to bone up on about the country you’re about to visit, little known facts and how to put on the ritz once there.
Using the subtitle “Big Trips for Small Budgets,“ within the guide’s pages you’ll discover idyllic islands, the smell of incense, crazy markets, friendly hill tribes, elephant trekking and more. You’ll find your nirvana at a Buddhist temple, on a perfect beach or on a rickety bus packed with chickens.
Written for backpackers by backpackers (a total of eleven in all!), this guide to 11 countries lets you go further, stay longer and pay less for an adventure of a lifetime.
