Bali Eats

Naughty Nuri’s has become one of those ‘must visit’ places for most Bali tourists from Asia in recent years. An authentic Naughty Nuri’s is also in Bali’s south, on Jln. Mertanadi. They serve the ribs and margharitas as served at the original site at Sanginggan, north-west of Ubud, plus much more! During this pandemic this Seminyak franchise has led the way for innovation. Sadly many local and foreign restaurateurs just closed up and went on holidays, instead here they tried to maintain their business as much as possible [and of course their loyal staff]. They are delivering pre-cooked Ribs and Sauce, sealed in a vacuum pack. You just place in a microwave or boil in the bag, good for 2 weeks. They are getting so many orders from Java [Surabaya and Jakarta] as well as Bali that they have had to buy extra vacuum machines, and they have created a new arm for their business post lockdown. Their normal menu is still available, either in house [with social distancing], takeaway or by delivery [Go Jek, etc.]. With management like that it is no wonder they are the leading Nuri franchise.

10th Table has been allowed to re-open in Lovina. As it only serves dinner the restaurant had been forced to close by the local banjar but now with an extended curfew it is once again open every night, except Mondays. Their 7 course degustation [now with course options] is still the most popular but the new Steak Menu also has friends, paticularly for their Tomahawk Steak, the ultimate for carnivores. Relaxed fine dining in Lovina, who would have thought that it would ever be possible?

Boardwalk is still open on the beachfront of the Bali Garden Hotel [Jln. Kartika Plaza]. It operates with a smaller than usual menu that changes as necessary as ingredients become unavailable. A more pleasant spot, for a relaxing snack or light meal, would be difficult to imagine. Popular Tapas include Salt & Pepper Squid and Tempura Prawns [with soy and ginger dipping sauce]. Pasta can be Spaghetti or Fettuccini [Carbonara], or Fusilli or Penne [Puttanesca; tomato, Kalamata olives, capers and garlic]. Salads a classic Caesar or the Boardwalk Special [iceberg, watercress, smoked ham, cheddar cheese, boiled egg, avocado, tomato, edamame, quinoa and chickpea with a raspberry vinaigrette, served wit garlic toast]. Burgers and a small cheap and interesting menu for the children, Steaks, Seafood, Ribs and a selection of Asian favourites. Finish with an interesting Apple & Tamarillo Pie. Relax and forget the problems of the world for a short time.

Warung Batursari [Jln. Batu Sari, Sanur] is small, professional and tasty. Local dishes plus a definite German/Austrian influence. Pork Belly, Roast Duck and Pork Knuckles star on the menu. It is local survivors like this that will help to rebuild Bali.

Cosmic Diners began with the first one on Sunset Road. They are retro American, straight from the 50’s [music and all]. Now there are three; Lippo Mall in Tuban and the amazing train carriage on The Bypass, just South of Sanur. So Burgers and Milkshakes [giant ones in a glass boot] are their forte, but there is much more as well [terrific rice bowls, hearty breakfasts, etc]. The Caesar Salad is a classic and you can even order extra bacon [crispy of course]. American specials continue to feature on their daily menus. Such as their 18 hour coffee-rubbed pulled pork with BBQ sauce on a toasted brioche bun or their ‘Summer in New York’ Pancakes, with strawberries on the side and topped with strawberry ice cream

Avenue A is Canggu and Bali’s gastropub [Jln. Permelisan Agung].. That is a term invented in England to define a Pub that also offered serious food options. In America it has been taken a step further to include a serious look at the drink side as well with exotic cocktails, craft beers, etc. Avenue A has re-opened throughout, just adjusting its hours as per the local curfews but now open every day till 9.p.m. but with very special beer offers and happy. hour offers on special days. The menu suits the place, you could almost be in New York, but with a Bali touch. Wagyu Beef Sliders, Confit Pork Belly, Tuna Sashimi Poke, Slow Roasted Beef Po’Boy sandwich and there are some interesting pasta dishes; hand-rolled fresh Garganelli with oxtail ragu and smoked ricotta, sweet grilled corn Risotto with rambutan wood-smoked rock cod and hand-rolled Potato Gnocchi with potato truffle foam, crisp onions, pancetta, parmesan. Dine-in till 9.00 p.m. every day, takeaway or home delivery with GoFood and Grab. Avenue A is Bali’s fun pub!
