Bali Eats

Bee Cafe is at the Beehouse Dijiwa Resort in Peliatan, Ubud. A magic setting with rice paddi views, it offers a perfect way to have breakfast. Food is basic western [breakfast eggs any which way, Bee Eggs Brekky, Eggs Benny], Set breakfast menus include American, Continental and Indonesian, and there is a good selection of local dishes for lunch or dinner. As with any restaurant catering to the whims of Bali’s tourists, the menu is all encompassing, Steaks, Pizzas, Burgers, etc., however it is the local Indonesian dishes that attract the most. Beef Rendang, Chicken Curry, Sweet and Sour Seafood. Or you can enjoy snack size Chicken Wings, Onion Rings or Spring Rolls at any time of the day

Aperitif Bar is at The Viceroy’s classic ultra fine dining restaurant, Aperitif, and apart from its support role to the restaurant it also has a life of its own with many unique functions. Every Friday night from 8.00 p.m.,  is Live Jazz night. Bar snacks are served from the magical Aperitif kitchen to go with their many crafted cocktails. The bar is. possibly the best stocked bar in Ubud, where you are almost certain to find your favourite label, no matter how exotic. It is the perfect place to unwind at the end of the week.

Brunch Club is on Jln. Legian, Legian. Brunch is often a great alternative to an early morning breakfast, particularly after a late night the night before. It can be just to catch up on a late breakfast or something a bit more exotic, which is what I prefer. Something like Spanish Flamenco Eggs or a Bacon & Egg Rosti. Neither are available here or anywhere else in Bali that I know of but the Brunch Club does have some interesting options. Shakshuka Toast [poached eggs with halloumi, labneh and crunchy chickpeas], Soft Bagel [cured salmon, herb cream cheese and pickled shallot]. Lobster Benedict and one of my all-time favourites, simple Sweet Corn Fritters [with extra crispy bacon, guacamole, tomato salsa and feta].

Naughty Nuri’s Sanur opened its doors whilst many long-standing places remain closed. Its progressive management has been rewarded with a constant stream of customers as they deserve. Everyone knows about the Ribs at Nuri’s but this franchise also has many other dishes on the menu worth trying. An American special that I can never resist is their Fish Wings, something that I had never before contemplated eating, The actual wing is crispy and the flesh at its base so sweet, not unlike that that surrounds the fish eyes. It makes a great starter to any meal at Nuri’s.

Hujan Locale, Jln. Sri Wedari. Ubud, re-opened, July 7. welcoming back their talented chef, Will Meyrick, fresh from opening his Perth, Australia eatery, Will St. The restaurant re-opens with a new menu featuring many new Indonesian dishes created by Will in his now well defined style. Classical Indonesian food as you have never seen it before. Start with Siobak Singaraja [cured pork belly caramelized in a spiced soy bean sauce with pickled cucumbers, mushrooms & krupuk babi], or Soft shell crab with salted duck egg, curry leaves & green chilli. The incredible mains include Tipat blayag [smoked chicken simmered in coconut & basa genep spices, with Balinese urap egg & crispy chicken skin] and Tongseng Kambing[slow braised lamb, wrapped in cabbage, with tomato, lime leaf & chilli, served with sambal pedas].

Luma  Jln Batu Bolong, Canggu, is a brand new Mediterranean showstopper, it is the collaborative work of two award-winning chefs: Cameron Emirali of 10 Greek Street in London, and Kieran Morland of Sangsaka and Merah Putih in Seminyak. The menu is all about rustic dishes that combine classic elements of Southern Europe’s traditions, with indigenous ingredients from Bali and nearby islands. Think seaweed-wrapped prawns, Batik lobster risotto and grilled octopus with orzo and a squid ink aioli. And the jewel in the crown here is the charcoal grill and the custom-made, see-through wood fire oven, taking centre stage in the dazzling Luma kitchen.

Aperitif  hosts Michelin star chef Benoit Dewitte in collaboration with their own Nic Vanderbeekan for a unique dinner, Saturday July 23. The cost is Rp. 2,500,000 for this once in a lifetime experience.

You & Mie is a small popular noodle house on Jln; Sukma Kesuma, Tebesaya, Ubud. The noodles are served with your choice, fish, chicken, and there are even gluten free noodles. Their home made dumplings [wontons]\also complement many dishes, All the base broths are thick and rich in flavour. The soups are hearty and with your noodles you can have fried chicken or pork ribs Many healthy options also exist in this very budget-priced cafe.
