Team Sports Turn Lives in the Right Direction
Anyone who struggles with addiction will know that it can leave you feeling lost, powerless and alone without direction. Among the various methods employed to combat the risks of relapse for those who have made it to the stage of seeking help to rehabilitate is team sport. Correlations have often been made between success in the business world and on the sporting field but such sports also play an important role in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, teaching people to harness the power of the group, overcome social anxiety, build trust, regain fitness and learn how to become a team player.
One such success story is young West Australian man, Jack Ahern. Jack was a promising junior sportsman in Perth who lost his way to drug addiction during his teens. Concerned and fearing for his welfare and future, his family checked him into a rehab facility in Bali around three years ago. As an element of his recovery, Jack joined the island’s Australian Football Team – Bali Geckos. Keen to help him along the path to keeping clean the club embraced him as a player and friend, particularly due to his tender age and vulnerability to relapse.
Jack has now become an integral part of the Geckos team, regularly showcasing the talent he possessed as an up and coming junior AFL player. His on field performance and dedication to keeping fit, clean and committed to rehabilitation has earned him numerous awards including Best Player at last year’s Asian Champs Grand Final and a coveted place on the All-Asian AFL team. Just recently Jack won the Gecko’s award for the club’s Best and Fairest, taking the title by just one point over last year’s winner, Bryce Critch.
Along with incredible support from his family and friends, Jack attributes an element of his sobriety to his involvement in this local footy team and a sponsorship from local gym F45, where he trained regularly under the guidance of Rick Olarenshaw and Bryce Critch to achieve optimum fitness and outstanding performances on the field! Jack is now living a clean, healthy and fulfilling life in Bali and enjoying playing his part with The Bali Geckos.
Formed 21 years ago by club president Greg Hinchcliffe, the Geckos are a football force to be reckoned with in South East Asia achieving continuous success on the field at the B Grade Asian Championships in 2016 and 2017 then merging with Jakarta as the Indonesian Volcanoes to become the A Grade champions.
The Geckos are in great shape and are keen to expand further in 2019, launching a women’s team and building on their current band of committed players in their junior and senior teams. Training will resume in the new year and all are welcome to join. The Geckos aim to invite more locals to try out for AFL and are keen to build on the junior boys and girls program.
Experience the benefits of being part of a team, discover your sporting potential, improve relationship skills, stay on track to a healthy lifestyle make friends and have a heap of fun by joining the Bali Geckos for their 2019 season. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook for sign on days and training sessions. You can private message them on these platforms if you’re interested in joining the club or sponsorship.

Music And More In Store for JSA in 2019
A month of school holidays means many of our munchkins have itchy feet and are keen to get up and moving for the new school term. January 7th signals the start of the new Junior Sports Academy program and with some exciting new activities in store, the Term 3 program is sure to generate more than a little excitement!
Playing sports, (whether they be team activities or more individual pursuits) teaches youngsters how to take risks and challenge themselves to be better. Through sport they hone new skills, develop fitness, build respect for leaders and authority as well as how to win and how to lose…… graciously !
Term 3 offers a massive 11 weeks of activities that feature the regular favourites such as Gymnastics, Swimming, Trampolining, Soccer, Dance, Tennis and Rugby, however this season also introduces a brand new feather to the Junior Sports Academy bow. Recognising that not all kids are keen to be carving it up on the sports field, JSA now incorporates the Finns Music Academy for youth who prefer to master their musical talents. Creating a learning space designed to play to each student’s strengths, the Music Academy teaches skills that build an individual’s ability to express their own musical identity.
Private Singing/Vocal Coaching Lessons are taught to care for the developing voice with focus on resonance, breath control, intonation, and development of high and low registers. These individual lessons help students to learn how to sing properly in order to prevent damage to the vocal cords, to maximize the singer’s vocal performance. Lessons are available for beginner and intermediate students and will be arranged on a “first come, first served” basis. Students will receive 10 lessons when signing up for full term with advanced payment but all lessons must be booked by Friday 4th January 2019 to ensure a complete quota of lessons.
Parkour also makes a welcome return to JSA’s term 3 line up. Overcome obstacles you never thought you’d clear using nothing but strength, agility and sheer fortitude. Learn to leap tall buildings (physically and metaphorically) as you move from point A to point B by way of jumps, climbs, swings, vaults, runs and rolls. Evolving from movements based on military obstacle course training, Parkour is a discipline that builds agility, confidence and even problem solving skills as you learn to assess your environment in different ways. These Wednesday and Saturday sessions are open to all levels however participants must be a minimum of 8 years of age.
JSA sports fans will be stoked to know that the long awaited blue soccer uniforms are back and available for purchase along with tennis shirts, gymnastics kits, JSA water bottles and wristbands for respective sports. Sign up for Term 3 sports is now available so act fast to avoid missing out on activities with limited placement opportunities.
A number of soccer and tennis tournaments also feature in the Term 3 line and you can find all information regarding tournament dates and any schedule changes on the JSA website:https://www.jsabali.com/ along with detailed descriptions about each available activity.
Without a doubt, the pursuit of sport teaches kids so many of the lessons that are integral to the journey along which youth become successful adult achievers and valuable members of their communities. Much more than just building a sound body, sports build well rounded, resilient and motivated children who often use these skills to go on and become successful adults. Sign them up for sport with JSA today!
