For it is in Giving That we Receive

Bali residents have indeed been asked to dig deep this year, especially in light of the ongoing Mt Agung evacuee crisis, however despite the added drain on pockets from an inevitable drop in tourist numbers affecting the island as a whole, it is heartening to see the spirit of Christmas still alive and thriving.

Since it’s inception well over fifteen years ago, the Annual Ladies Charity Christmas Lunch has been a popular end of year event and judging by this year’s turnout on Tuesday December 12th, little has changed. From an idea that grew among a group of like minded long term island residents, this annual lunch has evolved over the years as an opportunity to raise funds for the children of the island’s orphanages; spreading a little cheer among those who have little.

Many a Rupiah has been raised over the past decade with much of it in recent times benefiting the children of the Anak Anak Panti Asuhan Damien Orphanage in Alor – an island to the North West of Timor. In an effort to ‘spread the love’ and assist even more children and their families, this generous group of gals formed the charity, Living & Learning in late 2016, enabling them to distribute funds raised from each year’s luncheon to any registered Yayasan (non profit or charitable foundation) dedicated to the growth and education of children.

As in previous years, funds generated by this year’s event will again be directed first and foremost to the Alor Orphanage with residual monies to be distributed among other well respected charity groups who have also collaborated with Living & Learning in the past – Bali Jepun, Bali Children’s Foundation, Harapan and Bali Mother & Baby House. Some of the funds raised are also to go towards assisting the Mt Agung evacuees.

This year’s annual lunch was once again hosted by intimate Petitenget eatery, Jemme and was well patronised by an enthusiastic group of charitable ladies who were not only looking for a great day out, but more importantly seeking an opportunity to show their generosity to those less fortunate.

The dress code was a festive Rudolph red and guests arrived decked out in various shades of crimson. Arms laden with brightly wrapped Christmas gifts for the kids of Alor Orphanage, their purses were also packed with Rupiah to purchase raffle tickets and try their luck at winning their fair share of prizes. And what a swag of prizes there were! Along with tropical island or country getaways and luxurious villa stays, raffle spoils included stunning jewellery, gift vouchers for clothing and hand made gifts, prestige boat cruises, drink and dine vouchers, yoga memberships, hair and beauty and more… Winner winner roast chicken dinner!!!

Raffles drawn, cocktails consumed and sumptuous roast lunches devoured, it was time to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and imbibe in a little more Christmas cheer and there was plenty to go round!

The success of charity lunches the likes of these are due in no small part to the generosity of local businesses and entrepreneurs; many of whom are repeatedly called upon to donate prizes. This year has seen an even bigger demand for charitable donations to help raise funds for the volcano evacuees yet people continue to keep on giving! Huge appreciation must go to those who offered up prizes for the event along with Jemme restaurant for hosting the day. Special mention also goes out to Louise Henry, Jacky Ames and Jane Swinson as well as many others who gave up their valuable time to ensure the lunch was again a success.

A little goes a long way to helping those who are unable to help themselves, providing an opportunity for younger generations to work towards a better education and a more prosperous life for their families.
