Tana Toraja is in the highland region of Sulawesi and features stunning mountain terrain and a culture filled with curious rituals. Steep slopes descend into lush, emerald valleys punctuated by red soiled rice terraces. No volcanoes here….
Picturesque landscape aside, Torajaland is famous for its elaborate funeral rituals, effigies for the spirits of the dead, unique wooden houses, ornate carving and traditional dance. This seven day discovery tour of Toraja takes off from Makassar, Sulawesi on Sunday, July 22nd. From there the group will travel up to the highlands, spending the next week exploring small, traditional villages and learning first hand about this unique culture. Experiences will include visits to the burial cliffs, weaving villages and markets. Being funeral season, David is hopeful for the group to respectfully witness a traditional funeral ceremony.
Hotels and home stays will comprise the majority of the accommodation for the tour as well as one night’s stay in a local Torajan village dwelling. With 25 years experience, Torajan tour guide Sada will be sure to take the tour group along some roads seldom travelled, making for a very authentic, cultural expedition.
