Bali Kites Festival (3 July – end of August)
With the start of windy season the skies in Bali are being populated by kites of all sizes and colours. Kite flying is serious business here, as befits an old practice that started off as an agrarian festival to thank the Gods for abundant crops and harvests. It has evolved into a competitive event that involves entire communities who form kite teams to build the huge kites and compete for glory and prize money. Typically constructed from lightweight materials these kites can reach gargantuan sizes, measuring 4m across and 10m in length, not counting the tail which in itself can reach a length of 100m or more. Some feature intricately carved heads, some look like giant fish or birds.
The main and most famous competition takes place at Padanggalak Beach in Sanur although most villages will stage their own competitions locally. Depending on wind conditions, these contests play out throughout the months of July, August and into September.
