MOUNTAIN BIKE NEWS

2017 Baturduro – 18-19 November

With a smouldering  Mt Agung as a backdrop, the Baturduro extreme mountain bike enduro race will take place on the weekend of 18 & 19 November up in Kintamani in the Batur Caldera. Classes are men, women  and juniors up to 17 years. For those not in the know, enduro, a contraction of the word “endurance”, mountain biking is a type of mountain bike racing where the downhills are timed, and the uphills are not. Riders are timed in stages that are primarily downhill, with neutral “transfer” stages in between. The transfer stages usually must be completed within a time limit, but are not part of the accumulated time.

The winner is the rider who accumulates the lowest combined time from the timed downhill sections. The Baturduro takes place over two days and consists of 3 to 5 timed stages daily  which take place on technically demanding, generally descending terrain of the caldera and lava flows. These stages are linked by predominantly ascending “transfer” stages. Although a rider’s performance on the physically demanding transfer stages does not affect his or her result, they often have a time limit, or a latest allowed arrival time for the start of the next stage. The origins of enduro mountain bike racing are said to be inspired from both car rally such as the World Rally Championship and motorbike enduro racing.
