Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset [RCBUS] is pleased to announce that it is resuming its partnership with the John Fawcett Foundation [JFF] to help save eyesight here in Bali.
JFF is a humanitarian not-for-profit whose mission is to provide assistance to those in need in Bali. Its major focuses are the field of sight restoration and blindness prevention. JFF offers its assistance, free of charge to people in economically disadvantaged groups.
John Fawcett began his humanitarian projects in Bali in 1989. These included the Cleft Lip and Palate Program and the Mobile Eye Clinic for Cataract Surgery. JFF was established as an Australian incorporated association in 2000, bringing these programs together in one umbrella organization. In the same year, JFF’s Indonesian counterpart, Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia (YKI) was established and later registered as The John Fawcett Foundation Indonesia (Yayasan John Fawcett Indonesia). JFF is registered in Australia, Indonesia, the UK and the USA.
RCBUS has supported the following JFF projects annually in the past, before the Covid pandemic: mass eyesight screenings in villages, eyesight screenings in elementary schools and follow-up visits for children needing more care, and the mobile operating theater for adults’ cataract surgery. JFF provides state-of-the-art, sterile mobile unites which can bring cataract surgery to the people in villages who need it. These units are staffed with experienced ophthalmic surgeons and nurses. JFF also distributes free eyeglasses to those in need. JFF assists patients who have lost an eye, providing a natural-looking, custom-made artificial eye which helps restore confidence and dignity. Technicians work in consultation with JFF’s consultant ophthalmologist and skillfully create and fit prosthetic eyes, using high-quality materials which match the color of the patient’s original eye. Now that PPKM protocols are loosening, RCBUS is pleased to reestablish its support for JFF’s essential work.
RCBUS is also sharing information worldwide concerning JFF via Rotary International. The club has had discussions with Rotary E-Club Cologne in Germany, outlining JFF’s contributions to Balinese health and well-being. At our next joint Zoom meeting, RCBUS will provide information about the four country registrations as a legal not-for-profit that are held by JFF and will direct the club to JFF’s annual reports.
Both RCBUS and E-Club Cologne strive to support the seven focuses of Rotary International. Two of those focuses are the support of health care and the support of disease prevention. By supporting JFF, both RCBUS and E-Club Cologne can “Serve to Change Lives” within the given framework of Rotary International.
In order to extend our support to JFF and other legitimate not-for-profits, RCBUS must raise funds to distribute. The club has partnered with Pandi Egi, a local restaurant specializing in delicious babi guling. Soon, you will be able to enjoy incredibly tasty local cuisine and help to change the lives of local Balinese who are suffering economically because of the Covid pandemic. Just a reminder . . . please mark 10 September 2022 on your calendars. That’s the date of the 2nd annual RCBUS Bogies for Bali charity golf tournament. It will be held at the beautiful Handara Gold & Resort Bali nestled in the island’s northern mountains. All proceeds from this event go directly to projects that the club supports.
